Is bamboo bedding really a sustainable option? Ettitude sets the record straight.

Is bamboo sustainable?
Bamboo is certainly having a moment, and for good reason. The plant happens to be quite sustainable. Bamboo is regarded as one of the fast-growing crops and it easily grows without the use of chemicals or pesticides.
Bamboo uses 500 times less water than cotton, according to Ettitude, and produces 52 percent fewer CO2 emissions. Additionally, the process that Ettitude uses to make its CleanBamboo fabric leaves little waste. Seventy percent of the bamboo harvested for Ettitude is used to create fiber, and the remaining 30 percent is composted. And because it is a vertical plant and regenerates over and over, bamboo requires much less land than traditional cotton.
Unlike Ettitude’s sustainable process, the refining process used for most bamboo is loaded with chemicals and ultimately creates a rayon (or viscose) material, which releases toxic waste into waterways and means the end fabric is no longer biodegradable.

But Ettitude’s CleanBamboo products are different.
In the processing of its bamboo, Ettitude uses a non-toxic solvent that produces a non-hazardous effluent. The textile is created using a closed-loop system that recycles 98 percent of all the water used during processing.
Additionally, CleanBamboo fabric is stronger and softer than traditional bamboo textile and free from harmful chemicals.
Each sheet set from Ettitude saves 8,189 gallons of water, which is as much as 93 average Americans use in a given day. Additionally, choosing Ettitude’s sheets saves 25.9kg of CO2 emissions, the equivalent of driving 64.3 miles.
