At the Venice Film Festival and beyond, Timothée Chalamet brings sustainable fashion and ethical jewelry to the red carpet.
Timothée Chalamet makes everything look easy. So it’s no surprise that the 25-year-old Academy Award-nominated actor is a muse for designers and jewelers dipping their toes in the sustainability-is-cool pool.
Case in point: Venice Film Festival. The Dune star arrived at the Miu Miu Women’s Tales Dinner in Prada’s Re-Nylon bomber jacket and black trousers. He wore a pink Stella McCartney suit earlier that week. And he arrived at the grand setting of the Palazzo del Cinema on the Venice Lido wearing rings by Cartier. The star is now a ‘friend of the house’—an ambassador for the luxury jewelry label.

“We are delighted to continue our longstanding relationship with Timothée by having him officially join the Maison as a Friend of the House,” Arnaud Carrez, Cartier’s senior vice president and chief marketing officer, said in a statement. “As a man of passion, independence, open-mindedness and creativity, Timothée’s bold approach to life – conveyed through his professional choices and his free-spirited style – is intrinsically aligned with Cartier’s core values.”
The 174-year-old luxury jewelry brand has a robust corporate responsibility policy dictating how it conducts its business ethically, socially, and environmentally.
“Our policy applies to all of our product lines, all of our activities and our entire supply chain, especially our suppliers, as their day-to-day practices reflect on our Maison,” the Cartier website explains. “Cartier collaborates closely with its suppliers to encourage their participation and assist them in complying with our requirements.”
Sustainable styling
Chalamet frequently makes best-dressed lists. At the 2020 Academy Awards, he wore a vintage 1955 art deco Cartier brooch that featured 117 diamonds, rubies, white gold, and platinum.
Last year, Chalamet was spotted in Stella McCartney high-top trainers and backpack on his way to St. Tropez. He also sported an eco carry-on from Loewe’s Nature range, made from recycled and organic materials.
The French Dispatch star also championed popular vegan shoe brand Tretorn, recycled acid-wash McCartney jeans, and, of course, there was his Academy Awards ceremony Prada Re-Nylon tracksuit.
Prada is working to use recycled fishing nets and other plastic waste in its designs. By the end of this year the luxury label says all of its nylon will be recycled. It signed the 2019 The Fashion Pact, and set net-zero emissions targets by 2050 to comply with the Pact.
At a recent Dune photocall, the actor arrived decked from head to toe in a sustainable viscose Stella McCartney mushroom-covered suit.
And for Chalamet, at 25, it’s safe to say this is only the beginning of his sustainability commitments. He’s part of the very youngest of Millennials—missing the Gen-Z cut-off by a year. But he aligns with both generations’ strong commitments toward sustainability.
“I hear about celebrities who have stylists, and that blows my mind. It’s certainly not why I act, but I can wear cool clothes from some of the nicest designers in the world. So why am I going to pay someone to figure out what I should be wearing? That’s the fun part,” he told Time Out in 2018.
And that certainly jives with the ethos of his peers. A new report released earlier this month says climate change is a top priority for more than 33 percent of Gen-Zers entering the workforce. It’s a core consideration for more than half when making purchasing decisions. It’s a key driver behind the booming secondhand and resale markets, as well as a driver in the aftercare market.
