How to Ditch Deodorant: Plus 11 Natural Options for When You Just Can’t

Share

What really happens if you stop using deodorant? Here’s how to do it, and natural deodorant recommendations for when you just can’t.

The Internet is always abuzz with unusual topics, and celebrity hygiene habits are no exception. From Ashton and Mila raising eyebrows about the frequency of their kids’ baths to Matthew McConaughey admitting he hasn’t used deodorant in over 35 years. In response to this head-turning news, Lizzo came clean to her followers last year that she too stopped using deodorant, stating on Instagram “Ok… I’m w him on this one, I stopped using deodorant and I smell BETTER.” We just have to say, Lizzo, Matthew, we have some questions.

The one thing neither of the stars spoke to exactly is just how they transitioned away from this daily staple. Did they just toss it out the window (into the recycling bin, of course!). Are they stepping up the hygiene to prevent the stink? While we cannot confirm how Lizzo ditched the stuff, here’s how you too can detox your pits and move on.

How to ditch deodorant

First things first, armpit detox. Just as you probably cringed a bit when reading that—armpit detox? That sounds smelly. However, it isn’t as bad as it might seem. Your armpits and even sweat don’t naturally stink. The smell is actually coming from the bacteria that grows on sweat. When you first stop using traditional deodorants, especially those made with aluminum, that release will cause a little bit of B.O. as your body goes to release the waste and sweat the metal aluminum.

Not a scientific number here, but for most people, this detox lasts around two weeks and there are a few things you can do to make it more odor-free. Clay masks can help remove the buildup of antiperspirant or deodorant from years of use, therefore speeding up the detox process.

We love this Aztec Healing Clay mask to help the detox. You’ll have to hold your arms above your head while it dries, but it should help you achieve a few stink-free days. Additionally, you can pick up this Happy Pits Underarm Mask from Megababe. The combination of charcoal, clay and exfoliating acids helps to keep away the funk.

It is important to note, you will still sweat! And if you had previously been using an aluminum deodorant you’ll sweat slightly more now that you ditched it. Aluminum is the only thing that helps to stop the actual sweat. However, if you detox your pits and keep your pits clean post-sweat-sesh you should do fine.

A few other things that can help long-term are using a special underarm bar soap like this one from Kaia Naturals. You can also use a probiotic spray to add a daily dose of good bacteria to your underarms to combat any bad bacteria that try to show up. This AO + Restorative Mist from Mother Dirt uses live AOB that interacts with elements naturally found on your skin and in sweat to help balance the skin microbiome.

If you’ve done all you can do or simply just feel better with a little layer of protection and fragrance, opt for a natural deodorant to replace your traditional aluminum-laden products.
